FAQs
WHAT DOES THE EVALUATION PROCESS LOOK LIKE?
The first step is to complete our therapy evaluation forms before your arrival. Our evaluations are individualized for every client, family, and their needs. You should expect to review medical history, treatment history, and share your child's strengths and weaknesses. Your therapist may want to observe them during play or complete some testing to get a baseline of their skills. The evaluation is also a good time to ask questions and share what goals you have for your child. There is a chance that you may not be able to cover all information in the evaluation. Therefore, the therapist may continue to evaluate later in treatment sessions as well.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THE EVALUATION?
You will need to provide copies of your insurance card when you arrive. Other than that, you are not necessarily required to bring anything. However, it is always helpful to have videos or pictures if you have specific questions about why your child may be doing something you're unsure about.
For feeding evaluations, it is always helpful to bring snacks or small meals. We always like to see foods that they are successful with and also foods that may give them some trouble. We do have several snacks at the clinic, but we will better understand your child's needs with food that is more familiar in your household.
MY CHILD HAS FEEDING DIFFICULTIES. SHOULD I SCHEDULE AN EVALUATION FOR SPEECH OR OT?
Feeding is a complex process that involves several systems simultaneously. Speech therapists address the underlying motor control underlying feeding and swallowing. For example, chewing skills, tongue movement, bolus management, managing textures, and swallowing can be addressed by a speech therapist. On the other hand, occupational therapists address the underlying sensory component to feeding. For example, selective eating, oral sensitivity/awareness, and diet expansion can be addressed by an OT.
Frequently these underlying issues can co-occur. Therefore, your child may benefit from both speech and OT to address their feeding skills! Several of our kids benefit from having both services to ensure that each child's needs are being seen through a multi-faceted lens.
HOW LONG DO SESSIONS LAST?
Both OT and speech sessions are typically scheduled for 60 minutes. This may change depending on your child's individual needs (ie. some speech sessions may be scheduled for 30 minutes). The therapist will drop off your child about 10 minutes before the end of the hour and review what was completed in the session and any recommedations to try at home. Our sessions are scheduled back to back, so it is very important that you are on time to pick up your child. We do not have staff to watch clients between sessions and want to respect the time of our other clients as well.
ARE PARENTS/CAREGIVERS ALLOWED BACK IN THE SESSION?
Parents are always welcome back into the session. However, we always recommend you chat with your therapist to decide what will work best for you and your child!
DO I NEED TO STAY ON THE PREMISES DURING THE DURATION OF MY CHILD'S SESSION?
You are not required to stay at the clinic for the duration of your child's session. However, we do require that you stay in a close radius of our clinic and be accessible by phone in case something were to happen (accidents, sickness, etc.).
